Patient use of supplements with AMD

Patient Use of Dietary Supplements, Home Monitoring, or Genetic Testing for Nonneovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration

The striking thing I found about this is the disconnect between people that needed vitamin supplements and didn’t take them and those that didn’t need to take them and did. Over 80% of those without AMD in this study took dietary supplements (not necessarily AREDS-type). However, only 62% of those that should have been taking AREDS supplements took them.

This lack of compliance is seen in a lot of chronic eye diseases. It does, though, highlight our need to properly educate our patients on the proper use of supplements.
